· When did you start blogging?
I'd attempted blogging previously, probably about 3-4 years ago, but I think it was around late 2008 that I started doing Amy of AU and late 2009 that I started 'Picture This' on Tumblr
· Was it hard for you to keep up the blogging and why?
My earlier attempts failed, so I did find it hard then. Since blogging on Tumblr though, I've found it easier to keep up more regular updates. I think this has to do with the 'follow' function of Tumblr, it means I am constantly finding new images/videos/quotes that inspire me.
· Did you design your own layout? Was it difficult?
No, I used one of the Templates for Amy of AU, so it wasn't difficult at all. I have been playing around with a design for my photography portfolio though, and that has been more difficult. I think if I had a greater grasp on web design it would make it easier, but thats a project I am working on slowly.
· How do you decide what goes on to your blog?
Amy of Au is mostly images I find online that I'm drawn to. It's almost like a place that I file them away for future reference, while also sharing them with others. I'll also post music that I currently like, or any interesting articles I find along the way.
Picture this I started purely as a photo only blog. So again, blogging photographs I found that inspire me, and keeping them filed together in a blog. I think a lot of the photos here are also an indiction of the photographer I aspire to be.
· What are some advantages and disadvantages of blogging that you have noticed?
Advantages would be.... it's free! (mostly..) It's a great way to become involved in a community of other artists and photographers and network with them, and it also gives the online audience a greater sense of who you are by seeing what kind of things inspire you.
Disadvantages: Being a photographer, I'm always concerned that my photos will be used without my my consent (also with having them on flickr as well). Another disadvantage might be it could be hard for people to find your blog, or have to sift through a lot of poorly designed/written blogs to get to yours.
· Do you source where you find your posts?
As much as possible yes, I do admit to not doing it on occasion though, pure laziness.
· Do you feel as if it’s important to source where you find your images/text/videos in the blog world?
yes, credit is due to the creators of those images etc. Not only that, but its important for people to know where it came from so they can be informed, in the case they want to further learn more about that particular image etc.
· How do you think using a blog is beneficial for an artist? What are some non beneficial points, if any?
Obviously is a promotional tool. It gives the audience a more wholistic view of the artist (say for example if the artists includes a journal or events etc as part of their blog).
· What are a few tips for starting a blog for those interested in getting into the blog world?
Update regularly, but don't bombard people with posts
Find other peoples blogs that you love and follow them. Note what it is that you really like about theirs and see how you can simulate it, while still being unique
Use clear, relevant tags in posts
Think carefully about what layout and fonts/designs you use. I love simplicity.
Promote your blog via other social networking avenues (Twitter, Facebook etc)
