I, myself have very limited knowledge with web design and programming, but I am interested in putting together my own artist website. I have websites I am interested in visually, but I know there is a lot more that goes into building your own website, and much to consider. To help further my research I asked 5 questions to a friend of mine, a graphic designer. With his professional training I was interested in what his answers would be. Much of his responses and advice matched with other interviews/research I have collected. Keeping your website simple and easy to navigate are two reoccurring topics. Here are his responses:
1 What advice would you give to someone designing their first website?
Keep it simple and try to have a proper hierarchy of information to keep your message clear and concise.
2 What is the biggest misunderstanding when designing a website?
Over-designing. The main idea of the site should be to get the message across and to allow for simple navigation of the site. It is not solely a piece of art, but a piece of art with purpose.
3 What is the biggest mistake or problem you see in website design?
Unclear navigation!
4 What are the benefits to hiring a graphic designer to design their website rather than doing it themselves?
A website designer has much more experience to intuitively know what works in terms of navigation patterns, hot areas and the balance of form and function.
5 What are a couple of your favorite websites in terms of their graphic design?
